Playing the Long Game

A retired pastor said that when beginning his career, he dreamed of being a heroic figure—a Superman minister immediately accomplishing amazing feats for God’s kingdom. Nearing retirement, he realized that life rarely affords quick and remarkable successes. Instead, his career required him to play the long game—faithfully planting seeds, and letting God grow them as He wills.

As a financial advisor, I constantly counseled clients against looking for quick and large investment returns. Such returns require precise predictions about the future, which are difficult to perform accurately.

Consider: At the beginning of 2023, nearly all stock market experts predicted a down market only to have the S&P 500 finish the year up 24%, close to its all-time high. This prompted a Wall Street Journal reporter to conclude that, “If investors have learned anything from 2023, it is the difficulty of making accurate predictions about the market’s next turn.”

The Bible also counsels against relying on short term predictions. “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.” (Proverbs 20:1) and “A fool multiplies words, for no man knows what is to be, and who can tell him what will be after him.” (Ecclesiastes 10:14)

Instead, do what has worked for investors and mankind throughout time. Study history, not enticing rumors of quick profits. Invest in quality things, both financially and spiritually, which have proven themselves over the long term. You’ll avoid earthly mistakes and improve your eternal standing.
