The End Times

Are the End Times near? More countries are acquiring nuclear bombs. And many of these countries hate each other enough to use them. Will their bombs bring on the end?

While nuclear weapons did not exist in biblical times, the Bible leaves no doubt that this earth as we know it will end. But when and how?

In describing the end, Jesus says, “Nation shall arise against nation…” and this warfare will signal the end’s beginning. (Matthew 24: 7-8)

Joel 2: 30- 31 describes the end as involving “blood, fire and billows of smoke… the sun will be turned to darkness ...” Images of a nuclear holocaust?

But good news! The prophet Joel also hears God saying “I will pour out my spirit in those (last) days.” (v. 29) “And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (v. 32)

The Apostle Peter confirmed Joel’s safe harbor of calling on the Lord by quoting it at Pentecost, when God placed His spirit on believers. (Acts 2: 17-21)

In describing the end times, the prophet Daniel adds that, “None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.” (Daniel 12: 10)

What can we do in the meantime? Study God’s word to become wise and understand. Call on the Lord. And as Jesus instructs in Matthew 24: 36, keep watch, because we will never know when the end will occur. By keeping watch, He means keeping our spiritual house in good order.
